Is It Alright to Have Your Roof Worked On in Cold Weather?

There isn’t a temperature limit when it comes to installing or working on fiberglass shingles as long as the proper precautions are taken. A roof repair or replacement during cold weather is possible as long as a skilled contractor does the job. ——————————————– CONTINUE READING ——————————————–Read on to learn about the risks and precautions GAF roofers take to make installation and repair easier and prevent shingle damage in lower temperatures. Possible Issues In extremely hot weather, shingles may stick together in the packaging or on the roof. Shingles are also more prone to damage from foot traffic and tears during installation. Meanwhile, in very cold conditions, shingles may become brittle and can even crack or break where bent. They would not require to be hand sealed. Shingles also tend to curl in extremely cold weather. Cold Weather Tips To make the roof replacement process easier, shingles should be stored in a heated area above 70° F (21° C) for at least 24 hrs, before use, if possible. Doing so will make the shingles more pliable and easier to work with. GAF doesn’t recommend contractors to use the racking method, which requires lifting or bending the shingles to place the last nail. Special precautions should be taken in cold weather because this method can cause shingles to break or crack immediately or in the future. The shingle’s sealing time will depend on the slope of the roof, it’s orientation, and how much sun or heat it is exposed to. Your contractor may need to hand seal the shingles if it gets too cold to activate the Dura Grip™ Adhesive.Storm Master Inc. is the area’s leading roofing contractor.
