What You Need to Know Before Insulating Your Attic

One of the easiest ways to reduce your energy costs, especially during the cold months, is by having your unfinished attic properly insulated. According to the Department of Energy, a sufficiently insulated attic can save you 10 to 50 percent on your heating bill.

A trusted roof replacement expert shares things you should know before starting with this project.

Types and Material Options

Two of the most common types of attic insulation are loose fills and batt. Material options typically include fiberglass, cellulose and mineral wool.

Loose fills come in bags and can be spread manually or using a machine. This type of insulation is ideal for attics with irregular joist spacing, plenty of obstructions and penetrations, and existing insulation. On the other hand, batts are usually packaged in rolls and available in different thicknesses and widths. They are great for attics with standard joist spacing, no insulation, few obstructions and enough headroom.

Seal Air Leaks

Gaps in the attic and roof leaks will allow conditioned or heated air to escape, making your insulation ineffective. This will also affect your home’s overall comfort and energy costs. Make sure to seal air leaks in your attic and get regular inspections from a roofing contractor to prevent roof leaks.

Don’t Use Your Attic as Storage

The easiest way to add insulation in your attic is through the floor. However, if the floor is covered in plywood, your contractor won’t be able to insert sufficient insulation underneath it, even if you live in a warm climate. It’s best to have the flooring filled up and layer new insulation on top of the old. This means you’ll need to find somewhere else to store your stuff.
