Loose fills come in bags and can be spread manually or using a machine. This type of insulation is ideal for attics with irregular joist spacing, plenty of obstructions and penetrations, and existing insulation. On the other hand, batts are usually packaged in rolls and available in different thicknesses and widths. They are great for attics with standard joist spacing, no insulation, few obstructions and enough headroom.

Gaps in the attic and roof leaks will allow conditioned or heated air to escape, making your insulation ineffective. This will also affect your home’s overall comfort and energy costs. Make sure to seal air leaks in your attic and get regular inspections from a roofing contractor to prevent roof leaks.

However, if the floor is covered in plywood, your contractor won’t be able to insert sufficient insulation underneath it, even if you live in a warm climate.
