Home Heat Loss: Where Your House Loses the Most Heat

All houses experience heat loss regardless of their style and construction and while usually harmless, it can have a big impact on your energy usage and comfort levels. With winter just around the corner, it’s vital that your home loses as little heat as possible and get ahead of the problem areas before the season officially starts.

Your local roofing contractor at Storm Master Construction & Roofing shares the parts of your house that are most susceptible to heat loss and what you can do about them.

The Walls

35% of the heat loss your home experiences is due to the walls, with heat escaping usually due to lack of or diminished insulation or existing damage. Addressing wall heat loss is tricky though and often not worth it since it involves breaking down the walls to add new insulation. Instead, we recommend that you address your windows and roof first, or add some insulation in the attic. These are often enough to offset the heat loss your walls generate.

The Roof

The largest part of your home is also one of the most susceptible to heat loss. Warm air always rises above cold air and this causes heat to escape from the roof frequently – even when it’s in excellent condition. The heat leak is usually negligible, but it becomes a real concern if the roof is letting too much heat escape.

This often happens when there’s a leak or if the roof itself has a structural problem. The risk of heat loss is the reason why we always recommend you perform an inspection and do preventive roof repair before winter. A roof that’s free of cracks and holes and has adequate insulation, will always keep your house warm and toasty.

The Windows

Like the roof, the windows play a large role in keeping your house insulated and as comfortable as possible. If they are damaged, lack sufficient weather stripping, or are past their expected lifespan, then they will contribute to the increased heat loss in your home.

Fortunately, addressing window issues is simple and straightforward and the results are immediate. For good measure, you can even make them extra toasty by hanging a curtain.

Addressing heat loss in your home keeps your family comfortable and safe, while also keeping your home as energy-efficient as possible. Storm Master Construction & Roofing is ready to assist you with your home winter preparation project through our roof replacement, insulation and exterior services.
