Loose-Fill Insulation: Features and Benefits

Loose-fill insulation is one of the most common types of attic insulation and remains a cost-effective option for roof replacement projects. Storm Master Construction and Roofing shares details about this time-tested attic insulation.

What is Loose-Fill Insulation?

Loose-fill insulation, also referred to as blown-in insulation, is a type of attic insulation that is made of loose fibers that are spread on the attic floor. Loose-fill insulation is available in cellulose or fiberglass. Cellulose insulation is made from recycled paper products, such as discarded newsprint, cardboard and paperboard, which is treated for fire resistance. Fiberglass insulation is made from recycled fiberglass, similar to batt insulation.

The installation process is simple and it only requires two installers. A length of tubing is connected to an industrial blower. The tube is then run from the ground and into the attic. An installer feeds the insulating material into the blower, while another installer operates the business end of the tube in the attic. This process takes only a few hours, which makes it ideal for a new roof installation as it gives the roofing contractor more time to finish the new roof.

Advantages of Loose-Fill Insulation

Loose-fill insulation can be installed in just about any roof shape, as the fibers can be blown into tight corners and can fill spaces that batt insulation covers. Since the finished installation doesn’t have seams, loose-fill insulation can provide better insulation by up to 22%. Celluloid insulation is an eco-friendly option, thanks to its completely recycled content.

Installation is fast and straightforward, which is partly why the upfront cost is comparatively lower. It should be noted that improper installation runs the risk of overfluffing the insulation. This creates air pockets that are detrimental to its insulating properties. Proper attic temperature and moisture levels should likewise be maintained in order to avoid clumping, which leads to “holes” in the insulation layer.
