Safety Tips for Working on a Roof

The number one reason why we discourage doing your own roofing work is it’s simply not safe. However if you really must do roof repair yourself, heed the following safety tips from our experts at Storm Master Inc.

Don’t Work Alone

Never do any roofing work alone. You need someone to help keep the ladder steady as you climb, load and unload supplies, or be available in case of an accident. There are certain situations where this is not possible, such as when you’re the only adult in the household. In such situations, don’t risk it and call a professional.

Invest in a Quality Ladder

If you see yourself doing plenty of climbing, such as when you have to clean your gutters or upper-story windows, then you need to invest in a quality ladder. You need a quality ladder with the right weight rating and the right length: your ladder should extend at least three feet beyond the roof edge. Additional features such as safety hooks and spikes can help ensure ladder stability when in use. Your roofing contractor may already have told you about the “4-to-1” rule and it’s one worth remembering: for every 4 feet of ladder height, the base should be 1 foot away from the wall.

Wear the Appropriate Attire

It’s imperative to wear appropriate clothing. Since you’ll be staying on the roof for several hours, a light-colored shirt with long sleeves can help keep you cool. A tool belt may hinder movement; a tool bucket with a stable base is better. Avoid wearing casual shoes such as sneakers. Instead, use work shoes that provide better grip.

Learn to Use Your Tools

If this is the first time you’re doing roofing work, practice using the tools before you start climbing. Nail guns in particular are dangerous when improperly used. Make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions, particularly on how to hold it when not in use and on calibrating the pressure. Practice on pieces of plywood until you get the hang of using it.
